EY Academics

At LCS, Early Years students are taught more than just the Manitoba curriculum. While teaching the curriculum, teachers integrate a Biblical world view by weaving Biblical truths into the teaching of all subject areas. The learning environment in the classroom encourages exceptional academic performance and behavior through the setting of achievable, but high, expectations. Teachers are provided a wide range of professional learning opportunities allowing them to be knowledgeable about current educational research and practices.

Students receive instruction in the areas of Music, French and Physical Education by qualified teachers in their fields of specialty.

Physical Education

The Provincial curriculum for Physical Education  focuses on five areas: Movement, Fitness Management, Safety, Personal and Social Management, and Healthy Lifestyle Practices. In the Early Years program students are also taught to Be Safe, Always Bring your Best, and to Have Fun. Students learn sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play. Through age appropriate games and activities, students work on transport, manipulation, and balance skills in the gym.

Kindergarten students have Phys. Ed. each day they are in school. Grade 1-3 students have 30-minute classes three times per six-day cycle and one 60-minute Basic Movement class per cycle which focuses on basic movement skills such as skipping, hopping, jumping, galloping, and ball throwing. Grade 4 students receive three 45-60 minute classes each cycle. K-4 Phys. Ed. classes are taught by Physical Education specialists.

Music

Early Years Music classes are taught by trained Music teachers. Students are taught using the Orff method of Music education, in which children learn music by experiencing and participating in a variety of different musical lessons and activities. The Orff-based program focuses on the following elements: singing, movement, speech, instruments, listening and composer study. Students experience music in dynamic ways in the classroom, and have performance opportunities at Christmas and Spring concerts, the Winnipeg Music Festival, and school chapels.

Student Support

Our goal is to provide assistance that will enable all students to be successful in learning activities in their classrooms. We provide both indirect service through consultation, collaboration and coordination with the teacher in the classroom and direct service to the student  in the resource room. Either or both of these services are provided as required.

Many of the intervention programs at LCS take place in the Early Years where the emphasis is in developing basic reading and writing skills. Students that require additional reading support are given one-on-one or small group instruction based on the latest teaching techniques that help students with these skills. As well, students that require additional support in math and have gaps in essential number sense are given one-on-one or small group instruction to help with developing these specific skills.

Enrichment activities are provided for those students who are working above grade level.

English As An Additional Language (EAL) services are also available to students in the Early Years program at LCS.
