Library
The library is a place of adventure and learning for our Early Years students. Students may find that the library has been transformed into an Egyptian tomb or a medieval castle where books provide entrance to realms of new knowledge and enjoyment. The library staff may be attired as doctors to address the need to care for books, or they may be dressed up as their favorite book character to promote I Love to Read month. A love of reading is encouraged as teachers and library staff help students find ‘just the right book’ or engage them in story time and puppet plays.
Teachers and library staff also work in partnership with students to find information, whether in print or online. Students are guided through the research process so that they learn to evaluate, and ethically use and apply information. Our collection is developed to support the curriculum with an emphasis on a Biblical world view.
Our library is a loving, respectful and ordered environment at the heart of LCS where all staff and students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 are supported in the academic and spiritual goals of Linden Christian School.
Technology
Our purpose for the use of technology in Early Years is to teach students to use up-to-date tools, while working towards the fulfilment of the LCS vision. To do this, we follow Manitoba guidelines laid out in a program called Literacy with Information Communication Technology (LwICT), while also teaching students to use ICT responsibly and ethically, to support critical and creative thinking about information, and to think about communication as citizens of the global community.
At each grade level key technology concepts are built upon, driven by the core curriculum in subject areas including Science, Math, and E.L.A. ICT concepts are learned and immediately used practically in each curriculum area. For example, in Kindergarten this involves the correct use of technology such as the computer mouse and keyboard to learn to manipulate 2D shapes in a drawing program to create pictures.
We currently have many ICT tools ranging from simple digital cameras to entire sets of laptops that are brought to the classroom. We are constantly evaluating the use of tools and software to see how they can be used to enhance a student's connection to the curriculum material, and ultimately help them reach a Biblical and practical understanding of their world.
