Suggested Practice Techniques

1) Read your assignment book – practice assigned music and follow your teacher’s instructions.  If the student is too young to read parents need to read the assignment book and help their child to follow instructions.
2) Set aside a time each day to practice.  It is best to do it early in the day.  Practice takes a lot of mental energy, so don’t leave it for when tired or stressed.  Sometimes it works better to break practice up into two sessions a day.
3) Practice can’t be crammed so it needs to be done five to seven days a week.
4) Practice new music first.  Practice in sections.  Practice the hardest part first.  Try to play the section three times without errors and then move on the next section.
5) Correct mistakes right away.  When you repeat mistakes, they are harder to get rid of later on.
6) Point and count or tap and count through the section first to get a feel for the rhythm.
7) Practice hands separately first to make sure of notes and fingering.
8) Practice SLOWLY at first.  Once you can play it with all the notes correct and the correct rhythm and articulation (legato, staccato, accents, etc.) you can start to work up to playing to tempo.
9) Try to start playing at any point in the music.  When you can do that you really know the piece.  When you really know the piece you can start to work on being musical.
10) Practice your technique.  Finger exercises, scales, chords, arpeggios are assigned by your teacher to support the music you are learning to play.
11) Attend recitals and concerts and listen to recordings of music.  Listening to music will help you to pick up musical concepts and ideas.
12) Participate in recitals and concerts!
