Spiritual Development
The Middle Years are a time when students experience a huge level of growth and development on multiple levels - emotional, physical and spiritual – going from a relatively small world to an expanding one. Middle Years students begin seeing life beyond themselves and need to spend time finding their places in a vast and exhilarating world. Knowing this, LCS seeks to guide our students into becoming astute and active members of our school community and the communities beyond within the context of a safe and empathetic environment. As a Christian school, we have the unique privilege of addressing the spiritual development of our students. As our vision statement outlines, we want our students to become “...devoted followers of Christ, insightful thinkers, discerning decision makers and compassionate community members”.
Prayer is a regular part of the day for both staff and students. Our Grade 5-8 students spend time on a daily basis in prayer with their homeroom teachers. Many of our Grade 7 and 8 students and staff also attend weekly prayer meetings over lunchtimes or before school. Students can meet with our school’s youth pastor and spend time praying and worshipping God together. Staff pray regularly for students and make this a normal part of staff meetings.
LCS holds regular chapels for all areas of the school. Middle Years chapels occur once per six-day cycle and are grouped into separate Grade 5/6 and Grade 7/8 chapels. We focus our chapels on topics that engage and teach our students in a way that allows them to apply their learning to everyday experiences. Chapels are a time for students to explore their relationship with God as they worship Him and build community with each other in a safe environment.
Students are involved with mission projects during the school year such as World Vision and Operation Christmas Child. Students are also given opportunities to participate in service ministries that include interacting with seniors in the community, serving at Winnipeg Harvest, and adopting missionary families to regularly connect with and support through prayer. Last year, one grade of Middle Years students decided that they would like to sponsor a child from a developing country through Compassion Canada. Their sponsored child is their own age and will finish the sponsorship program at the same time as these students graduate from grade 12.
